Why Lifejackets Matter
Lifejackets are an important part of water safety for people travelling, working or taking part in activities on or around water. When correctly selected, fitted and used, they can provide essential flotation and increase a person’s chances of staying above water during an emergency.
Through this campaign, Great Lakes Life Saving Society promotes greater awareness and proper use of lifejackets and supports efforts to make appropriate safety equipment more accessible to people who need it.
A Focus on Safer School Journeys
Helping Students Travel More Safely by Water
For some students living in island communities, travelling to school means crossing Lake Victoria by boat. Recent reporting from Kachanga found that more than 30 pupils travel by boat to Kachanga Primary School, while students at Nekemeya Seed Secondary School also make the journey by water.
These journeys can become particularly challenging during periods of strong winds. At Kachanga Primary School, school officials have reported that attendance can fall during windy periods when parents are reluctant to let their children travel by boat.
Through this campaign, GLLSS aims to contribute to safer school journeys by helping make appropriate lifejackets more accessible to students who travel by water.

Supporting Safer School Journeys in Kachanga
Our initial focus is supporting students who travel by boat to access education in Kachanga. Recent reporting found that more than 30 pupils travel by boat to Kachanga Primary School, with students travelling from landing sites including Kaaya. The same reporting also documented students travelling by boat to Nekemeya Seed Secondary School.
Lifejackets have already been provided to some students in the area, demonstrating both the need and the value of continued support. Through this campaign, GLLSS aims to contribute to making appropriate lifejackets more accessible to students who still need them.
